The concept for Ginger Smoke wasn't conceived from a single short story, but actually spawned from a conglomerate of stories that I wrote in my creative writing classes while I attended college. This one, however, proved to be the backbone of the story and originally donned the same title (it was also awarded the William's Prize for creative fiction from Lehigh University in 2008):
